Background Research

Precedent Studies

Precedents combined imageThe houses analysed in this study have been selected to show a variety of approaches and possibilities when designing small scale dwellings. The projects range from relatively complex structural systems expressing the vernacular, to more minimal buildings seeking to achieve a contemporary minimalistic aesthetic. This study questions the importance of site context in relation to new buildings and highlights innovative approaches in response to the vernacular both structurally and through the choice of material. The study provides a platform which allows us to question; whether it is acceptable to knock down a building simply to replicate it? Whether it should it be mandatory to always add value to a building which was there previously?

Themes of Architecture

themes combined pictureThe Macro Micro group looked at different architectural themes as an architectural study. These themes are common threads in all of our projects and research and thus we felt necessary to analyse them in more detail. Analyzed themes include landscape, community, place, material, scale and enclosure.

Study Trip to Scandinavia

Oslo 3We were given the opportunity to take part in a study trip to Scandinavia for a six days during September, which saw four students travel to Oslo and Copenhagen. We wrote about our experience and photographed more interesting findings.
