Macro Micro is concerned with the theory, design and development of affordable, high quality, high performance housing in Scottish Urban and Rural Environments with a goal to achieving more sustainable low carbon communities.

There are some skills shortages in the Scottish construction industry to meet and comply with impending UK and EU targets for the design and production of low carbon buildings. Currently, this can only be met by bringing in external expertise and solutions, inevitably leading to the side-lining of local and regional developers, construction companies, suppliers, and professionals. This studio and it’s associated projects aim to reverse this trend, providing a vehicle for local and regional businesses to up-skill and up-scale output, becoming regional and national leaders in low carbon design and solutions.

This year’s studio will focus on identity, regional form and sustainable rural and urban communities, through design and the study of theories. It will explore the relationship between people, place and environment, designs for minimum energy, in conjunction with spatial, material and formal quality.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThese theories will be explored in both the Ninewells Hospital Shelter project and the Schoolhouse in Cottown, and will provide a platform for our individual thesis’s. Through the projects we will carry out research into existing construction techniques and modern approaches to the vernacular. The nature of both projects allows us to work directly with stakeholders, giving us the opportunity to experience working on live projects.
